*Ismail Ali, Sandro Moiron, Martin Fleury and Mohammed Ghanbari University of Essex, Colchester CO4 3SQ, United Kingdom ABSTRACT This paper considers the impact of data partitioning form on wireless network access control and proposes a selective dropping scheme based on dropping the partition carrying intra-coded macroblocks. Data partitioning is an error resiliency technique that allows unequal error protection for transmission over ‘lossy’ channels. Including a per-picture, cyclic intra-refresh macroblock line guards against temporal error propagation. The paper shows that, by this scheme, when congestion occurs, it is possible to gain up to 2 dB in video quality over assigning a stream to a single IEEE 802.11e access category. The scheme is shown to be consistently advantageous in indoor and outdoor wireless scenarios over other ways of assigning the partitioned data packets to different access categories. This counter-intuitive scheme for access control purposes reverses the priority usually given to partition-B data packets over that of partition-C.

Performance Evaluation of H.264 Mapping Strategies over IEEE 802.11e WLAN for Robust Video Streaming
In this paper we propose several mapping schemes for streaming video generated by state–of–the–art H.264 codec over IEEE 802.11e enabled wireless LANs. The schemes take advantage of both 802.11e’s QoS mechanism and some novel features of the H.264 codec, so as to protect the most important information in terms of visual quality and reduce distortion under network congestion. The proposed method...

متن کاملIntra - Refresh and Data - Partitioning for Video Streaming
Intra-refresh macroblocks and data partitioning are two error-resilience tools aimed at video streaming over wireless networks. Intra-refresh macroblocks avoids the repetitive delays associated with periodic intra-coded frames, while also arresting temporal error propagation. Data-partitioning divides a compressed data stream according to the data importance, allowing packet prioritization sche...

We present in this paper a reliable optimized transmission of H.264 video streaming over IEEE 802.11e Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) based on a Cross-Layer Adaptive Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (CLA-EDCA) MAC architecture. The IEEE 802.11e EDCA offers a prioritized transmission to guarantee the minimum packets delay and drop rate needed for time bound applications, such as VoIP and Video....
متن کاملA Cross-Layer Design for Video Streaming Over 802.11e HCCA Wireless Network
Video transmission over wireless networks has quality of service (QoS) requirements and the time-varying characteristics of wireless channels make it a challenging task. IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN has been widely used for the last mile connection for multimedia transmission. In this paper, a cross-layer design is presented for video streaming over IEEE 802.11e HCF Controlled Channel Access (HCCA)...
